Caveat emptor
I found that quote I was referring to in my previous post. It comes from Charles Hamilton, who was a premier autograph and manuscript expert. In talking about Joseph Cosey--a notorious forger who unfortunately had a particular fondness for Edgar Allan Poe--Hamilton stated, "long ago I concluded that there must be far more forgeries of Poe by Cosey than there are original Poe letters."
Considering how much of Poe biography--what we know, or think we know about the man--is based on "Poe letters," I think this quote of Hamilton's should be placed in red letters three feet high above the desks of everyone who writes about Poe, just as a reminder not to be too trusting.
